Red hot on fire risk assessment

A fire risk assessment is an essential part of the risk management process. With regard to life safety it is legally required in all workplaces and must be kept up to date.

We are experts in this field and have worked on fire risk assessments for a wide range of building types and complexity. The principle objective of a fire risk assessment is to ensure that, should a fire occur, risks are eliminated or minimised for occupiers of the building. Our approach is to first gain a full understanding of the building, assess and record the existing fire performance and then make any necessary recommendations on improvements with justification. Oculus also provide guidance on fire safety management, policies and procedures. Fire risk assessment includes:

  • Ensuring that exits and staircases are wide enough to allow occupants to escape quickly.
  • Ensuring that final and storey exits are in suitable locations, so that all the occupants can either escape in two directions, or have a short enough travel distance to be able to escape in one direction before they are cut off by fire or smoke.
  • Associated provisions need to be made regarding early warning, emergency lighting, fire fighting equipment, signs & notices, maintenance and training.

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires that the majority of premises, other than dwellings, have a fire risk assessment carried out. These include; businesses with more than 5 employees, premises with employees and used by the general public and common areas of flats.
